For new grass seed to properly germinate and grow it will need to be watered correctly. The main goal when watering new grass seed it to keep it moist at all times. This may sound like a simple task, but it can be difficult due to several environmental factors and our own individual schedules. However, if it is not done, then some or all of the new grass seed will not germinate. It’s a fact of nature that once the germination process has begun, if adequate moisture is not provided to the new seedling, it will not survive.
Watering New Seed
Considerations when watering new grass seed
The wind and sun can quickly dry out the soil surface. Trees, shrubs, buildings, existing turf, and clouds can shade some areas, but not others. With so many variables it is not possible to state a given amount of time to water because some areas will dry out quicker than others. The key to maximum seed germination is to keep the soil moist at all times.
General watering guidelines for new grass seed
Under normal circumstances a lawn should be watered deeply, but infrequently. For a newly seeded area, however, watering should be done multiple times per day. If you have an in-ground system set your automatic timer to water 5-10 minutes in the early morning and another 5-10 minutes at mid-day - adjust if necessary to maintain soil moisture without saturating the soil. If some areas are drying out between watering, then a third or fourth watering by hand may be necessary. Once the majority of the grass seed has germinated the frequency of watering can be reduced, but the moisture level of the soil will need to be maintained until the root system of the new grass plants are fully established.
Watering New Grass Seed
Avoid over watering new grass seed
Over watering can be just as detrimental as no watering at all. The goal is to keep the top inch of soil moist at all times. Frequent, not lengthy, watering is required. Moist, not soggy, soil is the way to achieve maximum seed germination.
